Grimes Reveals Meaning Behind Daughter’s Unique Name ‘Y’, Represents Curiosity and Eternal Question
Grimes and Musk are known for giving their children unconventional names. Their first child, a son born in 2020, was named X Æ A-XII, which they nicknamed “X.” Grimes had previously explained that the name represented “the unknown variable” and “a mathematical expression.”

When their daughter was born in December 2021, Grimes initially shared the name Exa Dark Sideræl Musk, which was a compromise between her preferred name of Odysseus Musk and Musk’s preference for the name X Æ A-XII. Grimes also revealed in a Vanity Fair profile that they referred to their daughter as Sailor Mars, a nod to the “Sailor Moon” manga series.
Grimes and Musk’s unconventional naming choices have sparked debate and criticism in the media and among the public. However, the couple has defended their choices, with Grimes stating in a 2020 tweet that their children’s names are “just X, like the letter X. Then A.I. Like how you said the letter A then I.”
The couple’s unique names for their children have sparked discussion about the ethics and legality of unconventional names. Some countries, such as Germany, have strict naming laws that prohibit names that could harm a child’s welfare or cause embarrassment.
However, in the United States, parents have significant freedom in naming their children. The only legal requirements are that the name must be spelled using the 26 letters of the English alphabet, and it cannot include numerals, symbols, or punctuation marks.

Grimes and Musk’s children’s names have also generated interest in the meaning and symbolism behind names. Many cultures place great importance on naming practices, and names can carry significant cultural, familial, and religious significance.
Grimes has previously explained that she believes in the power of names, stating in a 2016 interview with The Fader, “I think having a good name is really important, but I also think it’s important to give your child a lot of options, you know, to empower them to change their name if they want to.”
Despite criticism and controversy, Grimes and Musk’s unique naming choices reflect their unconventional personalities and innovation in their respective fields. As for their daughter “Y,” it seems that the name will continue to spark curiosity and discussion for years to come.
